Can My Electric Hot Water System Be Fixed? | Todd's Gold Coast

Wondering if your electric hot water system can be repaired or if it needs replacing? Todd's explains the common issues, what can be fixed, and when it's time for a new tank.

Can My Electric Hot Water System Be Fixed?

If your electric hot water system has stopped working, you're probably wondering: can it be fixed, or do I need a whole new system? The good news is that in many cases, electric hot water systems can be repaired quickly and affordably.

Common Electric Hot Water Problems That CAN Be Fixed

    • Faulty Thermostat: If your water is too hot, too cold, or fluctuating, the thermostat might be broken. This is a simple and relatively inexpensive part to replace.
    • Blown Heating Element: If you have no hot water at all, the heating element inside the tank may have burnt out. Heating elements can be replaced without needing a new tank.
    • Tripping the Power: If your hot water system keeps tripping the circuit breaker, it could be a faulty element, thermostat, or wiring issue. Our dual-licensed electricians can diagnose and fix this safely.
    • Leaking Pressure Relief Valve (PTR Valve): It's normal for the PTR valve to drip slightly as water heats and expands. But if it's constantly running or leaking heavily, the valve needs replacing—not the whole system.

When You Might Need a Replacement

While many parts can be replaced, there are times when replacing the entire unit is the only option or the most cost-effective choice:

    • The Tank is Leaking: If the cylinder itself is rusted and leaking from the bottom or seams, it cannot be repaired. You will need a new hot water system.
    • Age of the System: Most electric hot water systems last between 10 to 15 years. If your system is over 10 years old and requires major repairs, it might be more economical to upgrade to a newer, more energy-efficient model.
    • Rusty or Brown Water: If the hot water coming out of your taps is rusty or brown, the inside of the tank is likely corroding. This is a sign that the tank is failing and will need replacing soon.

    What Should You Do?

Never attempt to fix an electric hot water system yourself. It involves both water and 240V electricity, which is a highly dangerous combination. Always call a licensed professional.

At Todd's Plumbing & Electrical, our dual-licensed plumbers and electricians can diagnose your hot water issue quickly. We carry a wide range of spare parts in our vans, meaning we can often fix your system on the spot. If it does need replacing, we can supply and install a new system on the same day.
