Is It Normal For A Hot Water System To Make Noise?

Hot water systems are not completely silent. Normal operating sounds include the faint hum of a heating element, the low rumble of a gas burner igniting, or the whir of a heat pump fan.

During the heating cycle, it is also common to hear slight expansion noises as the metal tank heats and expands. A solar hot water circulation pump will make a quiet humming sound when operating, and a heat pump will sound similar to an air conditioning unit.

However, when noises become loud, intrusive, or change suddenly in character, it usually indicates a developing fault. Banging, popping, loud whistling, intense vibration, or harsh buzzing are not normal and should be investigated to prevent a complete system failure.

What Different Hot Water Noises Mean

The type of noise your system is making provides strong clues about the underlying issue:

    Noise TypeCommon Causes
BangingSediment, expansion, pipe movement, water hammer
    PoppingSediment build-up on heating elements
    HummingElectrical components, transformers, loose elements
    BuzzingRelays, electrical faults, contactors
    ClickingExpansion, switching components, gas ignition
WhistlingPressure or valve restrictions, tempering valve issues
VibratingLoose pipework, failing pumps, unbalanced fans
Fan NoiseHeat pump operation, fan motor wear, debris

    Hot Water System Banging Noise

A loud banging noise is often caused by water hammer, which occurs when a tap is turned off quickly, sending a shockwave through the pipes. If the pipes aren't properly secured, they can bang against the wall or the hot water tank.

Inside the tank, banging can also be caused by severe sediment build-up or sudden thermal expansion. Installing water hammer arrestors or securing loose pipework usually resolves plumbing-related banging.

    Hot Water System Popping Noise

A popping or crackling sound, similar to a percolating coffee pot, is almost always caused by sediment build-up. As minerals settle at the bottom of the tank, water can become trapped beneath the sediment layer.

When the heating element turns on, this trapped water boils, turns to steam, and forces its way through the sediment, creating a popping sound. This drastically reduces the efficiency of the heating element and can lead to premature failure. Flushing the tank or replacing the element may be required.

Hot Water System Humming Or Buzzing

A low, consistent hum is normal for an electric element heating water. However, a loud or harsh buzzing sound often points to an electrical issue.

Buzzing can be caused by a loose heating element vibrating in its mounting, a failing relay, a struggling transformer, or a contactor that is not engaging cleanly. Because these are electrical faults, they should always be investigated by a licensed electrician to ensure the system is safe.

    Hot Water System Whistling

Whistling sounds typically indicate a restriction in water flow or a pressure issue. This can happen if a valve is not fully open, if there is debris caught in the tempering valve, or if the pressure and temperature relief (PTR) valve is forcing water through a very tight space.

If the whistling is accompanied by low hot water pressure, a faulty tempering valve is often the culprit. Read more on our Hot Water Pressure Problems Gold Coast page.

    Heat Pump Making Noise

Heat pumps are naturally louder than standard electric systems because they contain a compressor and a fan. A steady hum and fan noise are completely normal.

However, if the fan begins to rattle, screech, or vibrate excessively, it may indicate worn bearings, debris stuck in the casing, or an unbalanced blade. A harsh grinding noise from the compressor suggests a serious refrigeration or mechanical fault. During colder Gold Coast mornings, you may also hear unusual sounds during the system's automatic defrost cycle. For more details, visit our Heat Pump Repairs Gold Coast page.

    Solar Hot Water Pump Noise

Split-system solar hot water units rely on a circulation pump to move water between the tank and the roof collectors. A healthy pump produces a very quiet, smooth hum.

If the pump becomes loud, rattles, or whines, it may be struggling against an airlock, dealing with restricted flow, or the internal bearings may be failing. A noisy solar pump is usually a sign that it is nearing the end of its life and needs replacement. See our Solar Hot Water Repairs Gold Coast page for more.

    Electric Hot Water System Noises

Electric storage systems are generally very quiet. The most common noises are the popping of sediment during heating, the click of the thermostat turning on and off, and the occasional hiss of the PTR valve releasing pressure. Any loud buzzing or electrical arcing sounds require immediate attention.

    Gas Hot Water System Noises

Gas storage systems will produce a low rumble when the main burner ignites. Continuous flow systems will click rapidly as the electronic ignition fires, followed by the sound of the fan and burner. If a gas system produces a loud "whoosh" or a small explosion sound upon ignition, it indicates delayed ignition — a potentially dangerous fault that requires a licensed gas fitter.

    Vibrating Pipes And Water Hammer

Vibrating pipes are often caused by water hammer, high water pressure, or loose pipe brackets. When a valve closes quickly (such as a washing machine solenoid or a mixer tap), the sudden stop of water flow sends a shockwave through the pipes. If the hot water pipework isn't securely clipped, it will vibrate and bang against the wall framing.

Is A Noisy Hot Water System Dangerous?

While many noises (like sediment popping or water hammer) are annoying rather than immediately dangerous, some sounds are warning signs of serious faults.

Loud electrical buzzing can indicate a fire risk or short circuit. Delayed gas ignition (a loud booming sound) is a significant safety hazard. A high-pitched whistling from a pressure relief valve could mean the system is dangerously over-pressurised. If you are ever concerned about a noise, it is always safest to turn the system off at the switchboard (or isolate the gas) and call a professional.

Does A Noisy Hot Water System Need Replacing?

Not always. Many noisy components — such as solar pumps, heat pump fans, heating elements, and tempering valves — can be replaced individually, restoring the system to quiet operation.

However, if the noise is caused by severe internal tank corrosion or decades of solidified sediment in an old storage tank, replacement is often the most economical choice. We provide honest advice on whether a repair or replacement is the better long-term investment.

How We Diagnose Hot Water System Noises

    1

    Noise Identification

We listen to the system during its operating cycle to identify the exact nature and location of the sound.

    2

    System Inspection

We visually inspect the tank, pipework, valves, and components for signs of wear, leaks, or loose fittings.

    3

    Pressure Testing

We check the mains water pressure and system operating pressure to rule out pressure-related whistling or banging.

    4

    Electrical/Gas Testing

We test elements, thermostats, relays, or gas ignition systems to identify electrical buzzing or delayed ignition issues.

    5

    Recommendations & Pricing

We provide clear advice on the cause of the noise and upfront pricing for the required repairs.

Common Solutions For Noisy Hot Water Systems

    • Valve Replacement: Replacing whistling tempering valves or discharging PTR valves.
    • Pump Replacement: Installing a new circulation pump on a solar hot water system.
    • Element Replacement: Swapping out a sediment-encrusted heating element.
    • Pressure Regulation: Installing a pressure limiting valve or water hammer arrestors.
    • System Flushing: Draining and flushing the tank to remove loose sediment.
