Common Chromagen Heat Pump Issues We Fix
We diagnose and repair all issues with Chromagen HP170 and HP280 (Midea) heat pump hot water systems.
Error codes on the controller
E0 (upper tank sensor/T5U), E1 (lower tank sensor/T5L), E4 (evaporator temp/T3), E5 (ambient temp/T4), E8 / element/thermostat related after E-heater activates. We test sensor resistances, wiring to the PCB, and replace faulty parts as needed.
No hot water / lukewarm water
Sensor/thermostat faults, restricted airflow over the coil, low ambient driving E-heater constantly, or refrigerant/element issues. We verify operating mode, timers and booster function.
Unit runs constantly / short cycles
Dirty or iced coil, blocked air path, low ambient operation, incorrect mode/timer settings, PCB or sensor faults.
PTR (TPR) valve dripping
Some discharge is normal; steady flow points to high pressure/temperature or a worn valve. We test/replace valves and confirm relief settings (1000 kPa on HP170/HP280).
Noise & vibration
Fan/bearing wear, debris on the evaporator, compressor start issues — we clean, realign and replace components as required.
How Chromagen Heat Pumps Work
Chromagen’s all-in-one (Midea) heat pumps use a fan, evaporator, compressor and tank-wrapped condenser coil to transfer heat from air into water.
ECO / Hybrid / E-Heater modes
Versatile operating modes to balance efficiency with hot water demand.
Operating Range
Operate down to ~5 °C in ECO, and −20 °C to +45 °C with electric boost; the controller can auto-switch to E-Heater below ~5 °C.
System Specifications
R134a refrigerant, 48–49 dBA noise level, and max water temp 60–65 °C (model-dependent).
We service sensors, controller/PCB, fan & coil, compressor, booster element, anode, PTR/exansion valves, drainage & condensate.
