Old vs New Switchboards
See the difference between outdated, dangerous ceramic fuses and a modern, compliant RCBO switchboard designed to keep your family safe.

Ceramic Fuses
- High risk of electrical fire
- No protection against electric shock
- Prone to melting and short circuits
- Does not comply with modern standards
- Difficult to identify blown fuses

Modern RCBOs
- Protects against electric shock (RCD)
- Protects against overload & fire (MCB)
- Individual circuit protection
- Fully complies with AS/NZS 3000
- Easy to reset tripped circuits
When Should You Upgrade?
The age of your home is the biggest indicator of whether your switchboard is safe and compliant. Here is a general guide to switchboard safety based on when your home was built.
Ceramic Fuses & No Safety Switches
These older boards use outdated ceramic wire fuses that pose a significant fire risk and offer zero protection against electrocution. If your home still has ceramic fuses, an immediate upgrade is strongly advised.
Early Circuit Breakers (No RCDs)
While these homes moved away from ceramic fuses, the early circuit breakers often lack RCDs (safety switches). This means your wiring is protected from overload, but your family is not protected from electric shocks.
Partial Safety Switch Protection
Homes built in this era often have safety switches, but only on power circuits. Modern AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules require safety switches on ALL circuits, including lighting and hot water, for complete protection.
Modern RCBO Protection
New homes are built to the latest electrical standards with individual RCBOs (combined circuit breaker and safety switch) on every circuit. Your switchboard is likely compliant and safe.
